You Are Not a Burden
by Curt Harding on October 26, 2026

At AGAPE’s Fall Southern Social, keynote speaker Dr. John Delony reminded us that caring for ourselves is not selfish. It’s essential. When we tend to our own well-being, we’re better equipped to show up for the people who need us.
“Somewhere along the line, people convinced themselves that our mere existence is a burden or that our needs are a burden,” he said.
“But it’s a lie. You are not a burden. No, you’re not perfect. Yes, you’ve got things to work on. But we all do. You were put here by the God of the Universe, and you are a blessing.”
Delony reminded us that no matter how strong, successful or independent we may be, we were made for connection.
When we find ourselves scared and alone, snapping at loved ones, constantly scrolling or reaching for something to numb the discomfort, it may be time to ask for help.
“Have the strength, courage and boldness to sit in a room with somebody and say, ‘I’m not okay. Will you help me?’”
Drawing from his own experience, Delony spoke about the possibility of generational healing that begins when we take that first step toward our own well-being. When we face our struggles rather than ignore them, we make room for healthier relationships and a different way of living. That change can shape not only our own lives but the lives of those who come after us.
What the world desperately needs, he said, is what our children and spouses need, too: “whole, calm, regulated adults ready to face whatever is coming our way next.”
His closing reminder was simple, but powerful: “Be a good steward to yourself so that you can spend every minute giving yourself away.”
